Editor alternative
A Shotcut alternative if you wanted CapCut, not a filter list
Drift is a Shotcut alternative aimed at social and everyday cuts. Still free and open source, with stickers, captions and CapCut-like tools Shotcut does not emphasize.
Best for: Open-source users who respect Shotcut’s format support but want a more beginner, social-first timeline.
| Compared | Shotcut | CutWire Drift |
|---|---|---|
| Price / license | Free, GPLv3 | Free, GPLv3 |
| Personality | Power-user NLE | Creator-speed, CapCut-like |
| Stickers / karaoke titles | Not the focus | First-class |
| Auto captions | Not built-in the same way | Local Whisper addon |
| Cutouts / social templates | Possible with filters | Click-to-cut, look templates, beat snap |
| Maturity | Years of releases | Early (0.3.x) |
Where Shotcut still wins
- Shotcut’s format compatibility and filter depth are excellent.
- It is older, widely packaged, and documented for long-form editing.
- Hardware encoding and scope of FFmpeg filters go further than Drift today.
Shotcut is the default answer to “open source video editor.” It earns that. If you live in filters and unusual codecs, stay.
Drift exists because a lot of people who type that query actually wanted CapCut without the watermark. Stickers, karaoke captions, beat drop looks, subject cutouts — still GPLv3, still FFmpeg under the hood, different UI bet.
Who should switch
- You bounced off Shotcut’s density
- You want on-device speech captions and a sticker panel
- Linux + social video is the job, not broadcast mastering
Who should stay on Shotcut
Stay for weird formats, hardware encode rabbit holes, or production you already trust to Shotcut. Drift is younger.
